May 14th is Trail Cleanup Day!

We will have registration tables set up at the trailheads in Lewisburg (next to the Miller Center) and Mifflinburg (next to the Mifflinburg Community Park) from 9 AM to Noon on May 14th.

Stop by to pick up some trash bags, latex gloves and a pair of garbage grabbers* as well as a bottle of water and a light snack! Get your gear, get assigned a section of trail and away you go!

Full bags can be left at road intersections (not driveways!) while the grabbers can be returned to either trailhead.

Help us keep the trail clean and pleasant for everyone!  Questions can be directed to unioncountytrails@gmail.com or by calling (570)-524-3844

*Limited grabbers available

Trail Manners

If the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail seems busier than prior years it’s not your imagination. The number of people bicycling, jogging and walking on the trail is 75% higher than 2019. The Trail Authority reminds everyone to be courteous while enjoying the trail. The Rails to Trails Conservancy has 6 Golden Rules for safe trail use. Check out the first one in this video below about maintaining safe speeds.

Trail Traffic Up

Data shows that trail traffic on the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail from March 1, 2020 through May 24, 2020 is up 71% over the same time period last year. With fewer options during the pandemic people are increasingly turning to the trail for recreation. Please remember to be courteous to other users, follow the trail rules, do not litter, and clean up after your pet. See you on the trail!

Trail Safety Reminder

Notice to all trail users (both pedestrian and bicycle!): Please obey all traffic control devices and signs on the Rail Trail! We have received reports of individuals on bicycles that fail to stop at active road crossings with stop signs posted. Many of our rural roads carry heavy farm machinery traffic and these vehicles may not be able to stop quickly enough to avoid a bike rider crossing the road at speed.

Remember: if you are on a bicycle, even on the rail trail, you are considered a vehicle and are subject to the same rules and regulations as cars/trucks/etc. Failing to heed stop and yield signs puts both you and drivers on the roadways at risk!!

So please: Heed the signs, wear a helmet and RIDE SAFE!
